Sending Holiday Greetings on Wings
As I wrote in my previous post, art transforms into something else in print, and so, recent cardinal paintings became harbingers of holiday greetings.
The bird who had a pet name of Golden Girl is painted in gold this year. This pigment not only embodies her radiance on the canvas, but it is also a radiance that reaches beyond the surface by capturing and reflecting light of the surrounding space. The painted motion of take off and flight is echoed in the sparkle of gold wings. This painting called, “Flights of Fancy”, is a look at the swift, lighthearted physical and mental movement of this bejeweled bird. Movement, ornamentation, and playfulness continue in layers of the red male cardinal taking flight. The image on the card is at a stage when the painting is more graphic, so that it fits well within the form of a holiday card. The painting is a work in progress, and I plan to go back to it with more expressive layers.
Sending season’s greetings on the wings of birds that are treasured friends is my way to spread cheer that these cardinals brought to me and my threshold. The printed card is lighter than a bird and travels far beyond my reach, spreading messages of good will. It is a collaboration between fine art and the sender to send your own personal, unique thoughts in a very special and small package.
